This past Saturday, the Community Market Conversion program connected with dozens of South LA residents at the Earth Day South LA event. The event is hosted by Community Services Unlimited (CSU) – a member of the Community Markets Steering Committee that is advising on the selection and transformation of cornerstores in South LA. About a thousand people enjoyed the springtime heat, live music, healthy food cooking demos and environmental skills workshops at this event. Nearly everyone could be seen carrying off a new plant, a packet of seeds, a reusable bag and, of course, tons of information on the dozens of great organizations working for a cleaner, healthier planet for all communities. CMC Project Coordinator Clare Fox heard from numerous parents, students, teachers and healthcare providers in the South Los Angeles area about their desire for improved access to quality, culturally-meaningful food offerings in their local corner markets. She conducted an informal survey on residents’ attitude toward their own local corner store – Do you love it? Hate it? What could be improved? Do you feel “at home” in your local market? The results of that survey – and pictures- coming soon.
